For a coding unit based on video, video clipping i. Blocks of video in an internally coded I clip of a picture are encoded using spatial prediction regarding reference samples in neighboring blocks in the same picture. Video blocks in externally coded P or B picture clipping can use spatial prediction for reference samples in neighboring blocks in the same picture or temporal prediction for reference samples in other reference pictures. Pictures may be referred to as frames, and reference pictures may be referred to as reference frames. The residual data represents pixel differences between the original block to be encoded and the predictive block. The externally encoded block is encoded according to a motion vector that points to a block of reference samples forming a predictive block and residual data indicating the difference between the encoded block and the predictive block. The internally encoded block is encoded according to the internal encoding mode and the residual data. For further compression, residual data can be converted from the pixel region to the transformation region, resulting in residual transform coefficients, which can then be quantized. The quantized transform coefficients originally placed in the two-dimensional array can be scanned to form a one-dimensional vector of transform coefficients, and entropy coding can be applied to achieve even greater compression.
